Concha y Toro Winery: a bit of history

Viña Concha y Toro is the controlling company of the homonymous winery, founded in Chile in 1883, and which also has subsidiary wineries in Argentina and the United States. It is the main producer and exporter of wines in Latin America, and one of the ten largest wine companies in the world, 1 with 33 million cases sold per year in 2014 (297 million liters),  distributed in 135 countries. Their wines Casillero del Diablo and Don Melchor have achieved international recognition. As of 2010, it has been one of the official sponsors of the English football club Manchester United FC,  and in 2020 some of its subsidiaries have reached other sponsorship agreements in the world of football, mainly in the United States.

The origins go back to Melchor Concha y Toro, VII Marquis of Casa Concha and former Minister of Finance of Chile, and his wife, Emiliana Subercaseaux, who founded the winery in 1883. To start the winery, he brought grape varieties from the Bordeaux region in France. The grapes he brought were: Cabernet Sauvignon, Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon, Merlot and Carmenère. Currently the Viña Concha y Toro is still in the sphere of the Marquis of Casa Concha, and is additionally controlled by the Guilisasti and Larraín families.

Not only the origins of Concha y Toro are connected to the Chilean nobility and aristocracy. Currently, the company’s board of directors is made up of the IX Marqués de Casa Concha, the Chilean diplomat and ambassador Mariano Fontecilla de Santiago-Concha, great-grandson of the founder.  Likewise, in 1999 the president of the company, Alfonso Larraín Santa María, He applied for the title of Marqués de Larraín in Spain, to which his mother, the current Marchioness, gave Larraín the power to claim the title.

At present, the vineyards and factories of Concha y Toro are connected by roads with names alluding to this origin, such as Marqués de Casa Concha or Conde de la Conquista, titles related to the noble history of the company.

In 1922 the winery was established as a public limited company. In 1933 it was opened on the Santiago Stock Exchange,  where it is listed to this day, and that same year it began to make its first exports, mainly to Rotterdam. Holland. In 1950, the winery began to acquire more vineyards and also began the process of adapting its business to new markets and meeting a greater demand. Between the sixties and nineties, important steps were taken towards the growth of the company. In 1966 the Casillero del Diablo brand emerged for the first time, which would become the hallmark of the company, and in 1987 its first ultra-premium wine, Don Melchor, was launched.

At the beginning of the 21st century, the company further internationalized its operations: in 2001 it opened its trade, logistics and distribution office in the United Kingdom, which would be followed by offices in 11 other countries: Brazil, Canada, China, the United States, Finland, Japan, Mexico. , Norway, Singapore, South Africa and Sweden, which would join the existing ones in Chile and Argentina.9 In 2010 a sponsorship agreement was signed with the English club Manchester United. In this regard, Manchester United’s 2020 sponsorship director, Sean Jefferson, has mentioned that: “Manchester United’s relationship with Casillero del Diablo has been one of the most extensive and successful partnerships we have had. The synergy between the two trademarks has led to it being a natural alliance “, especially due to the equivalence of their distinctive symbols and seals.

In 2011, Concha y Toro bought Fetzer Vineyards, one of the largest wine producers in that country, in the United States for a value of $ 238 million dollars.3 The transaction included the purchase of several Fetzer subsidiaries, such as Bonterra Vineyards , Five River Wines, Bel Arbor Winery, Jekel Vineyards, and Little Black Dress Wines, which became the property of Concha y Toro.

More recently, Concha y Toro has achieved advertising campaigns with Discovery Channel, and its subsidiary, Viña Trivento, has been one of the official sponsors of Major League Soccer since 2020, and at the same time this subsidiary has established sponsorship agreements with the club of Inter Miami football
