Concha y Toro Winery

Concha y Toro Winery

Located in the prestigious Maipo Valley, just an hour from Santiago in Pirque, Concha y Toro offers stunning landscapes and world-class Chilean wines. Surrounded by centuries-old vineyards, the winery was founded in 1890 by the Concha y Toro family and built using traditional Cal y Canto techniques. This is where the famous Casillero del Diablo legend was born.

A Bit of History

Viña Concha y Toro, founded in 1883, is Chile’s leading wine producer and exporter. It also owns wineries in Argentina and the United States.

  • One of the top 10 wine companies in the world, it sold 33 million cases (297 million liters) in 2014, distributed across 135 countries.

  • Its flagship wines, Casillero del Diablo and Don Melchor, have gained global recognition.

  • Since 2010, the brand has been a sponsor of Manchester United, expanding sponsorships into U.S. soccer by 2020.

The winery was established by Melchor Concha y Toro, a former Chilean Minister of Finance, and his wife Emiliana Subercaseaux. To begin their venture, they imported grape varieties from Bordeaux, including:

  • Cabernet Sauvignon

  • Sauvignon Blanc

  • Semillon

  • Merlot

  • Carmenère

The winery is still linked to the noble lineage of the Marquis of Casa Concha, and is controlled by the Guilisasti and Larraín families. Its board includes Mariano Fontecilla de Santiago-Concha, a great-grandson of the founder.

In 1999, company president Alfonso Larraín Santa María sought to reclaim the title of Marquis of Larraín in Spain. The connection to Chilean aristocracy remains deeply woven into the winery’s identity—even local roads bear names like Marqués de Casa Concha and Conde de la Conquista.

Company Milestones

  • 1922: Became a public limited company.

  • 1933: Listed on the Santiago Stock Exchange and began exports, primarily to Rotterdam.

  • 1950s–1990s: Expanded vineyard holdings and adapted to global markets.

  • 1966: The Casillero del Diablo brand launched.

  • 1987: Released its first ultra-premium wine, Don Melchor.

During the 2000s, the company went global:

  • 2001: Opened a UK office, followed by others in 11 countries including the U.S., China, Japan, and Brazil.

  • 2011: Acquired Fetzer Vineyards in the U.S. for $238 million, adding brands like Bonterra and Little Black Dress.

In recent years, Concha y Toro has also:

  • Partnered with Discovery Channel for marketing campaigns.

  • Through Viña Trivento, sponsored Major League Soccer and Inter Miami FC.
