What´s the best season to visit the Carretera Austral?
The climate of Patagonia is unpredictable. You can have rains, winds, full sun, sudden cold, winds again … It does not make much sense to look at the weather forecast because everything can change.
However, we can agree that the best time to visit the Carretera Austral is between November and March / April. This period covers the end of spring, all of summer, and the beginning of fall. It is when a drier and warmer climate is expected, with temperatures between 10 ° C in the mornings and nights and about 20 ° C during the day. This for the months of December, January and February, which is considered high season. As with all of Patagonia in general, January and February are the months with the highest influx of visitors on the Carretera Austral and hotels and tourist services can be full. It is important then, to make reservations in advance.
Keep in mind also that from May to October practically all hotels and services in general will be closed, it is the low season. Some roads can become impassable due to rain and even snow and ice.
