How to reach the Carretera Austral in Patagonia?

The Carretera Austral is a long way of around 1200 km, from Puerto Montt in the north to Villa O´Higgins in the south portion. So, if you´re asking how to arrive?, it depends if you want to enjoy the complete route, or just a portion. The Carretera Austral can be divided into two main parts: the Carretera Austral North, and the Carretera Austral South. The first portion from north to south is the section between Puerto Montt and Coyhaique, and the second part or the Carretera Austral South goes from Coyhaique to Villa O´Higgins

How to get to the Carretera Austral? Flights to Puerto Montt

A good idea if you want to start the northern portion of the Carretera Austral, is to fly to Puerto Montt, and from there may be to stay few days in Puerto Varas and enjoy the amazing lakes district in Chile. If you visited Bariloche, you can cross to Chile via the Lakes Crossing activity and continue in Chile to visit the Carretera Austral. From Puerto Montt or Puerto Varas, you have around 1200 km to Villa O´Higgins at the end of the Carretera Austral. So, Puerto Montt is one of the head cities to enjoy this amazing scenery route in the chilean Patagonia.

How to get to the Carretera Austral? Flights to Balmaceda

If you do not want to explore the whole Carretera Austral, but want to see the most amazing destinations like Lake General Carreras, the Marble Cathedral, Puerto Tranquilo and Caleta Tortel, and it´s the south portion of the Carretera Austral, a good idea is to fly to Balmaceda Airport and from there, go to Coyhaique and use the city as a gate to visit the area. You also can arrive to Balmaceda / Coyhaique and visit the Carretera Austral entirely from south to north, to end in Puerto Varas and Puerto Montt.
