The Carretera Austral is a long way of around 1200 km, from Puerto Montt in the north to Villa O´Higgins in the south portion. If you do not want to explore the whole Carretera Austral, but want to see the most amazing destinations like Lake General Carreras, the Marble Cathedral, Puerto Tranquilo and Caleta Tortel, and it´s the south portion of the Carretera Austral, a good idea is to fly to Balmaceda Airport and from there, go to Coyhaique and use the city as a gate to visit the area. You also can arrive to Balmaceda / Coyhaique and visit the Carretera Austral entirely from south to north, to end in Puerto Varas and Puerto Montt.
