Jujuy: What to see, when to go, how is the weather?

What to see in Jujuy? When to go? How is the weather in Jujuy?

I´m sure, if you are planning a trip to the Argentine northwest, you have seen that although many attractions suggested for the area are in the province of Jujuy, the programs start from the city of Salta, in the province of Salta. And this is due to many reasons, one of them is that Salta has managed to position itself better internationally. Then, Salta has a better and greater hotel and tourist infrastructure in general, and finally receives more flights per week. All this makes Salta the starting point chosen by international tourism, to begin the visits of the beautiful and colorful Argentine Northwest. Now, is it possible to arrive in Jujuy and visit, for example, the Quebrada de Humahuaca, Las Salinas Grandes from there? Of course! And surely time will save time because the journey is not as long as from the city of Salta. So, a great idea is to combine both cities and stay in Salta to visit Cafayate, or enjoy the Train to the Clouds, then move to Jujuy and visit from there the Humahuaca Canyon with Purmamarca and the Seven Color Hill, Tilcara, Humahuaca, Huacalera; the Salt Flats, or the amazing Hornocal.

How to pronounce Jujuy?

There are many versions of the origin of the word Jujuy. Some attribute it to the tribe of the Jujuies, inhabitants of the valley when the Spanish arrived. Others claim that it would be an exclamation of joy and surprise at seeing something unexpectedly beautiful. They say that when the conquerors arrived at the exuberant valley from the north, after the exhausting march through the aridity of the plateau, they joyfully pronounced “Ijui!”, A word that jokingly repeated closely resembles Jujuy.

Despite the countless comments that were made about it, none were ever accurate. However, we consider it more accurate to understand that long before the arrival of Spanish to the territory that today comprises the province of Jujuy, it was already known about the existence of a valley, called by the natives with the word “Xuxuy”, spoken and written in this way by the Spanish. As he explains, the word would come from the Guaraní language and would mean “confluence or meeting of rivers”. Indeed, if we look at any map of the area, the valley is a perfect funnel in which a dozen streams converge that pour their waters into the Rio Grande. This is the most likely explanation. Now, how do you pronounce Jujuy?

Well, The correct way is: ju-juy, or with more details:

J – juh
U – uh, yoo, oo, ů
J – juh
U – uh, yoo, oo, ů
Y – yuh, ee, ah-ee (i)
