Trekking to Base de las Torres

Trekking to Base de las Torres. Torres del Paine National Park

Base Torres is a dream place located in Chilean Patagonia. Many international travellers from around the world, arrive to the park to walk along beautiful ancient forests, rivers, and waterfalls to get there, its three granite giants wait stoically over an emerald-colored lagoon. Because this is one of the walks that you must do at least once in your life, then we leave you all the information you need to do the Base Torres trek.

Trekking to Base de las Torres

If you booked the Base las Torres campsite, it is recommended to stay there to see the sunrise at the Base de las Torres the next day. From the campsite to the Base of the Towers it is about 45 minutes walking (without weight, things are left at the campsite). Depending on the time of sunrise, you have to leave the camp 1 hour or more before sunrise. The sunrise in summer (February) is around 5.25 in the morning. It is highly recommended to be at sunrise at the Base of the Towers, it is very beautiful and a unique experience. Also, it is a good time to take photos and make videos.

This is by far the most frequented section of Torres del Paine National Park, and most likely in the summer period there will be numerous other walkers on the way; the route is therefore extremely clear. From the Hostería Las Torres, a path leaves in the direction of the valley. After 10 minutes of walking, you will cross an old suspension bridge that crosses the Ascensio River. About 150 meters further on, a fork appears: to the left it leads to the base of Las Torres, and to the right the path leads to Los Cuernos and Valle del Francés. Then there is a zigzag with a steep slope and sparse vegetation. This zig zag, a product of the few trees and the high traffic of walkers, is quite eroded and several parallel tracks have been formed, so care must be taken not to further wear down the terrain. You will pass a new fork to Los Cuernos, to the left. This section allows you to gain about 375 meters of unevenness, from 135 meters above sea level. up to about 500 meters above sea level, before properly penetrating the valley and stabilizing the slope, but not before going down 50 meters to the first slope. About an hour to here. Then it rises again and passes next to another slope. After 45 minutes from the end of the zig zag, the Chilean campsite is reached on the opposite bank of the Ascensio River, in the shadow of a lenga forest. The campground costs $ 4,000 per person and there is a cafeteria, but there is no warehouse

It is not necessary to cross the river over the bridge and stop there, as the path always continues along the southwest bank. In the next section, the path enters the lenga forest, with a moderate slope, crossing several slopes that fall from Almirante Nieto. After about an hour ten from the Chilean campsite, at 700 meters above sea level, the foot of the moraine that gives access to the viewpoint is reached. There is a sign that indicates the path to the viewpoint and the fork to the Las Torres campsite (at this point one can refill with water and use the bathroom). From this point, the path climbs with a much steeper slope. First it goes next to a slope and under the shade of the small trees located on the edge of the moraine, but higher up the path is lost as such and you must continue ascending between the rocks, some of which are marked to show the route. After 45 minutes, from the sign at 700 meters above sea level, you reach the eastern end of the lagoon, from where you have a wonderful view of the three towers (Central, Monzino, Dagostini) and the Peineta and Nido de Cóndores hills.

What´s the best season to enjoy the Trekking Base de las Torres?

Although the trekking to Base Torres can be done throughout the year, the weather conditions are usually more stable during the summer months (December to March). This means that there is a greater chance of having clear days and observing Base Torres in all its splendor. Now, these months are also the busiest, and if your plan is to run into fewer people while the weather is good, we recommend doing the walk during April, October and November. To give you an idea of what the National Park looks like on these dates, we invite you to review these images of Torres del Paine in Autumn.

You must bear in mind that the weather in Patagonia is unpredictable and at any moment it can start to rain for hours or even days. Visibility at Base Torres is determined by low cloud cover. If there is only high cloud cover and the day is cloudy, then the towers can be observed without problems.

Trekking to Base Torres during winter is one of the most extreme ways of doing the circuit, but also one of the most beautiful. The National Park dresses in white like at no other time of the year and the Base Torres lagoon is frozen. A landscape that very few have appreciated live.
