Well, El Chalten is located only 215 from El Calafate, so no differences about what to eat in the area. Of course, you will find international cuisine in restaurants and hotels, but some local specialties are great, similar than in El Calafate, we suggest to taste the Patagonian Lamb and the Calafate berry in sauces and desserts. During trekkings in the Fitz Roy area, usually the box lunches are the best option. There are several companies that offers this products, and of course you can arrange your own box lunch:
The Patagonian Lamb
Called in spanish “Cordero al Asador” or “Cordero Patagonico al asador”, the Patagonian lamb is the king of the local specialties. Be sure to try some while you visit the area, either costillas de cordero (rack of lamb) or bife de cordero (lamb steak). The preferred way to cook it here is by roasting or grilling, and the lamb is reared locally on the Patagonian steppe. A great place to go is La Tablita, a restaurant or “parilla” where you can taste this exquisite lamb.
El Calafate berry
The city itself is actually named for a berry “el calafate”. It is a violet fruit used in jams, desserts and special infusions in the area. Some people say that if you taste or eats Calafate, you will return to Patagonia. Try the patagonian lamb with Calafate sauce!
