Indigenous Peoples of Patagonia Walking Tour

Itinerary

This cultural walking tour delves into the history, traditions and contemporary situation of the indigenous peoples of Patagonia. Participants learn who the original inhabitants were, how they came to the region, their cultural practices and how European colonization and expansion of the Argentine state affected them. The route covers key historic landmarks in San Carlos de Bariloche related to indigenous identity and offers insight into a significant but often overlooked part of Patagonia’s past.

The tour starts at the civic heart of Bariloche where you meet your guide. From there you walk to the shores of Lake Nahuel Huapi to explore sites connected to indigenous life and environment. The route continues to the Church of Our Lady of Nahuel Huapi where you learn about the relationship between the church and local indigenous communities. The walk also includes a stop at the Museum of Patagonia, where you have the opportunity to see artifacts and displays that reflect the life and traditions of the Tehuelche and Mapuche peoples. The experience gives context to their legacy in the region.
