Best Season to Visit Buenos Aires
Buenos Aires, often called La Reina del Plata, is one of the most European cities in South America. It’s a vibrant destination that serves as the gateway to many iconic places in Argentina: from Iguazú Falls and Patagonia, to Mendoza, Bariloche, and the Northwest.
But when is the best time to go? How’s the weather? Let’s break it down.
Buenos Aires Weather Overview
The city has a humid subtropical climate. Expect hot, humid summers and mild, relatively dry winters.
-
Summer (Dec–Feb):
Temperatures range between 18°C (64°F) and 30°C (86°F).
It’s the rainiest season, with up to 114 mm of rainfall per month.
Expect 9 hours of sunshine per day. -
Winter (Jun–Aug):
Temperatures drop to 7°C (44°F) at night and 15°C (59°F) during the day.
Winters are cool but not harsh, with fewer rainy days.
Rainfall averages 58 mm per month.
Key Climate Factors
1. Temperatures
The city gets hot in summer, especially in January and February.
Many locals leave for beach towns, making Buenos Aires less crowded and easier to explore.
2. Humidity
Humidity is always present—especially noticeable if you’re arriving from dry areas like Patagonia.
Be prepared for that warm, sticky feeling, particularly in summer.
3. Rainfall
Rain is more frequent in summer, but usually comes in short, intense storms.
For example:
-
January: 168 mm across 9.5 days
-
June: 54 mm across 7 days
4. Daylight Hours
-
Summer: up to 14.2 hours of daylight (January)
-
Winter: around 10 hours (June–August)
More daylight means more time to explore!
5. UV Index
Sun protection is essential, especially in summer. The UV index is high, so bring sunscreen—even on cloudy days.
So… When Should You Visit?
You can visit Buenos Aires all year round, but if you’re looking for the best weather statistically, go in spring (September to November).
-
Mild temperatures: 15°C to 27°C (59°F to 80°F)
-
Tolerable rainfall
-
The city blooms with jacaranda trees, creating purple-lined streets
-
Ideal for outdoor activities and sightseeing
Spring is perfect for walking the city, enjoying local cafés, open-air markets, and the parks in full bloom.
