If you’re visiting Puerto Madryn to enjoy its incredible wildlife—whales, penguins, birds, sea lions, and elephant seals—you’ll want to come prepared. This is Patagonia, and as part of this southern region of Argentina, it’s essential to bring the right clothing and gear.

Puerto Madryn is located at 42°46′S 65°3′W, with a temperate coastal climate influenced by the ocean. So, what should you pack?

What to Pack When You Visit Peninsula Valdés

Layering is key. This is true for any hiking trip, but especially in Patagonia, where the weather is unpredictable. Even in summer, you need clothing that adapts to sudden temperature changes.

Here’s a recommended layering system:

Base layer: Start with a technical tank top or quick-dry shirt
Mid layer: Add a thermal long-sleeve or fleece
Outer layer: A windproof and waterproof jacket is a must

You’ll likely warm up during walks, especially under the sun or when climbing stairs or hills. Having layers you can add or remove easily will help you stay comfortable as conditions change.
