Iguazu Falls in Argentina: The Lower & Upper Circuits
The Lower and Upper Circuits, along with the Devil’s Throat trail, are the main highlights of Iguazú National Park. These routes are among the most visited by international travelers, offering unforgettable experiences of Argentina’s natural wonder.
The Lower Circuit
The Lower Circuit takes you close to the heart of the falls. Its walkways lead beneath and beside the waterfalls, offering a more intimate and immersive experience. Here, you’ll truly feel the power of the jungle—the humidity, the sounds, the scents, and the rising mist that surrounds the area.
This circular trail covers about 1,700 meters and features eight stunning viewpoints. The full walk takes approximately 2 hours. Before starting the circuit, you’ll find restrooms and a bar at Cataratas Station.
Lower Circuit: Different Areas
The Upper Circuit lets you experience the falls from above, offering panoramic views of the Iguazú River as it plunges into the abyss.
The trail starts 200 meters from Cataratas Station, just like the Lower Circuit. It is flat and fully accessible, with no stairs, making it ideal for all visitors. The circuit extends for 1,750 meters, and the estimated visit time is 2 hours. Services such as restrooms and a bar are available nearby.
Upper Circuit: Different Areas
The walk begins near the Ecological Jungle Train’s Cataratas Station. From the start, you’ll enjoy amazing views of the horseshoe-shaped falls. A series of viewing balconies leads you past Salto Dos Hermanas, Chico, Ramírez, Bossetti, Adán y Eva, and Bernabé Méndez, culminating at Salto Mbiguá.
Here, the walkways are built above the edge of the falls, offering a dramatic vertical perspective that is both thrilling and beautiful. There are resting spots where you can pause to take in the scenery and recharge with the energy of the water.
Past Salto Mbiguá, a bridge crosses the Upper Iguazú River, leading to the spectacular viewpoint at Salto San Martín—the second largest waterfall in the park.
This is the best panoramic viewpoint in Iguazú National Park. From here, you can spot:
-
On the Brazilian side: Hotel das Cataratas and the elevators of the Naipi Area
-
On the Argentine side: the Sheraton Hotel, the Tanque Tower, San Martín Island, and in the distance, the footbridge to the Devil’s Throat
The trail ends with a 700-meter stretch through the islets of the Upper Iguazú River, elevated almost at treetop level, ending near Cataratas Station.
