The amazing Devil’s Throat in Iguazu Falls

Discover the Devil’s Throat: The Most Impressive Viewpoint at Iguazu Falls

Iguazu Falls, located in northeastern Argentina and shared with Brazil, is one of the New 7 Wonders of Nature and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It’s a place so breathtaking that Eleanor Roosevelt famously said, “My poor Niagara…” upon seeing it.

Among all the viewpoints and circuits in the park, one stands out: the Devil’s Throat, or Garganta del Diablo. It’s the crown jewel of Iguazu Falls and an absolute must-see during your trip to South America.

What Is the Devil’s Throat?

The Devil’s Throat is the most powerful and iconic waterfall within Iguazu. It consists of a massive horseshoe-shaped fall, formed by a group of cascades 80 meters high, where the river plunges with enormous force into a narrow gorge.

At this point, the Iguazu River’s flow is the highest in the park, averaging 1,500 cubic meters per second—that’s enough to fill 36 Olympic-sized pools in one minute! On clear days, you can see the mist rising from more than 7 kilometers away.

How to Access the Devil’s Throat

From the Argentinian side, visitors can reach the Devil’s Throat by boarding the Ecological Jungle Train, which runs on gas and drops you off at Garganta del Diablo Station.

From there, you’ll walk along a 2,200-meter round-trip walkway made of steel (the previous wooden one was destroyed in a 1992 flood). The footbridge leads you directly to the main viewing platform, offering close-up, unforgettable views of the waterfall.

This trail is fully accessible and is one of the busiest attractions in the park—expect crowds year-round.

General Facts: Devil’s Throat Trail

  • Trail length: 2,200 meters (round trip)

  • Estimated time: 2 hours

  • Accessibility: 100% footbridges, wheelchair-friendly

  • How to get there: Ecological Jungle Train or on foot

Can You Get Even Closer?

Yes! If you want an even more thrilling perspective, you can:

  • Take a boat ride from downstream piers that bring you close to the base of the falls

  • Book a helicopter flight (from the Brazilian side) to enjoy a breathtaking aerial view

Both options offer unique ways to experience the magnitude and beauty of the Devil’s Throat.

Plan Your Visit

We recommend visiting early in the day to avoid crowds and to maximize your time at this incredible spot. And don’t forget to bring:

  • A rain jacket or poncho (the spray is intense!)

  • A waterproof phone or camera case

  • Your sense of awe—you’re going to need it!
