From Perito Moreno Glacier to El Chalten

A great idea is to combine your visit to El Calafate and Perito Moreno Glacier with El Chalten, more if you´re a trekking lover. Because El Chalten is a small village, and starting point to enjoy different trekking trails to the unique Fitz Roy Mount.

El Chaltén is located in the province of Santa Cruz de la República Argentina, in the southern part of Patagonia. The landscape of this region is dominated by the endless plains of the arid steppe, where the two largest lakes in the country are located. To the west, the plain collide abruptly with the vertical granite walls of the Andes. Of all the mountain peaks, the Chaltén hill stands out for its height and unmistakable silhouette, about 3405 meters high, clearly visible more than 100 km from the plane or the road.

The usual thing is to arrive by plane at the El Calafate International Airport and from there by land the last 200 km to El Chaltén. Now, how to go from El Calafate to El Chaltén? Well, basically you have two options: by regular bus, or by guided tour from El Calafate.

Bus services from El Calafate (Perito Moreno Glacier) to El Chalten

The daily bus service between El Calafate and El Chaltén operates all year round, with at least two daily frequencies (idea and return) in the morning and in the afternoon. During the tourist season at least a third frequency is added, usually at noon. In the current season, all regular bus lines pass through the El Calafate International Airport.

El Chaltén has located about 200 km from the international airport of El Calafate and is accessed only by land, passing the scenic National Route 40 and Provincial Route 41, completely paved, in a journey of approximately 3 hours. Some transport companies offer connections to other destinations on Route 40, such as Perito Moreno, Los Antiguos, Bariloche, etc.
