Balmaceda and Serrano glaciers are located inside the National Park Bernardo O’Higgins, which is 31 miles North West of Puerto Natales and is part of the Andes mountain range. To visit it means to admire a majestic place, barely touched by mankind. Its access is only maritime, sailing through Última Esperanza inlet, named after the ‘last hope’ of finding the Strait of Magellan in 1557, for an expedition looking for it from the Pacific Ocean.
The trip starts in Puerto Natales and on the way it is possible to see the buildings belonging to the cold-storage plant Bories, which was one of the biggest meat processing industries in Patagonia. You can also observe a colony of imperial cormorant, a small colony of a sea wolf, and a variety of plants such as coihue, canelo (drimys winteri), lenga, ñire (nothofagus antarctica) and Calafate (berberis microphilla) among others.
Balmaceda Glacier can be seen from the ship, however, to visit Serrano glacier is necessary to walk for 20 minutes in a path bordering a small lake created by the melting of such glacier. For the return, there will be a typical Patagonian lunch at a ranch on the shore of Ultima Esperanza Fjord.
