Rio Ancestralities: Little Africa Walking Tour
Your experience begins in front of the Museum of Art of Rio (MAR), where you will meet your guide and receive an introduction to the history of Rio’s port district and its transformation over the years.
From there, walk to the nearest VLT station and enjoy a scenic light rail journey through the port area and past some of the main attractions along Olympic Boulevard. After leaving the VLT at the station indicated by your guide, continue to the Pretos Novos Institute.
At the institute, discover the archaeological site of the Pretos Novos Cemetery, an important historical record from the period of the transatlantic slave trade. The site preserves the memory of enslaved Africans who arrived in Rio during the colonial period and provides important context for understanding Brazil’s history.
Continue toward the former home of Machado de Assis, one of Brazil’s most important writers and a descendant of freed enslaved people. Learn about his place in Brazilian literature and the society he portrayed through his work.
The tour then reaches Valongo Wharf, once one of the principal arrival points for enslaved Africans in Brazil and the Americas. Today, the archaeological site is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and serves as a powerful connection between Rio’s colonial past and the present.
From Valongo Wharf, continue toward the Hanging Garden of Valongo on the slopes of Morro da Conceição. Opened in 1906, the garden contains replicas of sculptures that once decorated the former Empress Wharf.
Walk through Morro da Conceição, passing colorful Portuguese-style houses, traditional tiled façades, narrow streets and historic slopes. The quieter atmosphere of the neighborhood offers a striking contrast with Rio’s busy downtown area.
Continue to Pedra do Sal, historically connected with the unloading of salt and today one of Rio’s best-known locations for samba gatherings. Along the way, see the Hilário de Jovino mosaic, Rua do Escorrega and the staircase decorated with the Brazilian flag.
The walking tour finishes at Largo São Francisco da Prainha, an atmospheric square surrounded by colonial-style bars and outdoor tables. From here, you can continue enjoying the neighborhood independently, with food and drinks available for purchase.
For the immersive tour option, the experience also includes a percussion workshop inspired by the baterias of Rio’s samba schools. This option requires a minimum of five participants.
