Departure from the city of Salta by national route 54. 24 km to the west; Nestled at the foot of the mountain range, you can access Campo Quijano, a town that combines natural and cultural attractions that are very representative of the Salta feel, which invites you to enjoy the natural beauty of its different places and corners. Passing the town of Campo Quijano, also known as El Portal de los Andes, which precedes the imposing Quebrada del Toro, the route leads to Santa Rosa de Tastil, one of the most important pre-Inca sites in the region, which will have more than 2000 inhabitants, ruins and museums for lovers of archeology.
Already in the puna, San Antonio de Los Cobres rises, with its church, its brand-new school and inn, and the workplaces of the mines, gas pipelines, and some other industry in the area. In San Antonio, the Train to the Clouds and land excursions stop.
The artisans sell their regional products. Weaving is the main source of work for women in the area. It is an ancient custom that is transmitted from generation to generation. Here the legendary barracan is woven, a thick fabric made with llama or sheep wool that is characterized by the network of natural colors in which white, black and brown prevail. In San Antonio, most of the women knit pullovers, vests, socks, gloves, hats, ruanas, and blankets, among other garments, with sheep or llama wool. In general, they use three types of techniques to make them: the loom for ruanas and blankets, the two needles for pullovers and vests, and five needles for gloves and stockings. Many have “old looms” made of cardón (typical wood of the area) and others learned more modern techniques that reduce their hours of effort.
