Weather in Patagonia: when to go?

Patagonia is a wonderful place to visit and of course, the high season is the best time to go. In general, we talk about the October-March period, as the high season to visit Patagonia, a time when temperatures are pleasant, with a low level of rain and excellent daylight.

 

Weather in Patagonia: Temperatures

In Patagonia temperatures can be low during the winter season, for that reason, the summertime is perfect to visit this area. In Puerto Madryn and Peninsula Valdes, the average temperatures during summer (it´s December, January, February and March period) is 26°Celcius, with a minimum of only 13°C. Not bad, to enjoy the incredible sealife you can find there, like whales, penguins, orcas, sea lions, elephant seals, and more.

In Bariloche, the gate to visit the Lakes District, you will find temperatures around 21°Celcius maximum, with a minimum of 6 degrees. It´s cold morning and nights, but a wonderful climate during the day. Similar situation in Puerto Varas, on the Chilean side of the Lakes District, with maximum average temperatures around 18°celcius and a minimum of 10°celcius

In the southern portion of Patagonia, temperatures are lower. In El Chalte and El Calafate, you will find average maximum temperatures around 17-18°Celcius, with a minimum of 7°C only during the December-March period. A good idea is to bring a comfortable warm coat to enjoy the outdoor activities.

Ushuaia, the southernmost city in the world, has lower temperatures. The maximum average reaches 13°celcius with a minimum of 5°C. Again, you will find cold mornings and nights in Ushuaia and Tierra del Fuego.

Finally,  Torres del Paine National Park in Chile, with average maximum temperatures around 19°C and a minimum of 7°C.

Weather in Patagonia: Rains

And what about the rains?  It´s an important thing because Patagonia is a place to enjoy long trekking and outdoors activities in general. So, it´s great to avoid rains isn´t it?

 

Is Patagonia a rainy place?

Well, not in general, but rains depend on the area of Patagonia we´re talking about. Rains in the lakes district for example, are very usual, more than in the southern portion of Patagonia when rains are not very usual. Check the average rainy days per month in main destinations of Patagonia

Weather in Patagonia: Rains in Patagonia

As you can see, the areas located close to the ocean register more rains during the summer season. It´s Ushuaia with an average of 14 rainy days during the December-March period, and Puerto Madryn and Penisula Valdes with an average of 13 rainy days during summer. Torres del Paine offers an average of 5 rainy days per month, El Calafate only 4 rainy days, Puerto Varas 3 rainy das and Bariloche with 5 rainy days. So, summer is also a great time to visit the area because rains are not a problem.

Patagonia is a perfect place to enjoy outdoor activities, like hiking or trekking, boat navigations, kayak, horseback ridings… So, the daylight and the sunshine information is very important. You can find excellent daylight in Patagonia during the summer season in all the destinations: Ushuaia is the best place with 16 hours of daylight, and 5 hours of sunshine per day during the summer. Amazing place to enjoy the day and the outdoors activities for example. Torres del Paine and El Calafate has an average of 13 hours of daylights and 8 hours of sunshine which is also great. In the Lakes District, Bariloche offers 14 hours of daylight and 10 of sunshine, great to enjoy the lakes, and the mountains. Similar situation in the chilean side of the Lakes District, with 14 hours of daylight and 10 hours of sunshine in Puerto Varas. Finally, in Puerto Madryn and Peninsula Valdes you will find 14 hours of daylight and 8 hours of sunshine.
