Wineries to visit in Lujan de Cuyo

About 40 minutes south of Mendoza, the area of Lujan de Cuyo is considered to be where wine began in Mendoza. The elevation at an average of 3,000 feet above sea level makes its terroir very unique and perfect for wine production. Luján de Cuyo was also the first region to institute the AOC  for Malbec in 1993, which greatly advanced the wine industry in Mendoza. But, which are the most important wineries in the area of Lujan de Cuyo? Well, find a list of 4 possible wineries you can visit on your next trip:

Vistalba Winery

Vistalba Winery is unique in that the winery was designed so that the whole winemaking process takes place using gravity, without the use of pumps. Yes, it´s an amazing place.  The tasting room is also underground, and for that reason it´s different. You’ll have the opportunity to choose from many different wine tasting options. Vistalba offers a tasting menu for lunch at their restaurant La Bourgogne. Definitely one of the best options in the area.

Catena Zapata

If you´re a wine lover, I´m sure you heard about Catena Zapata. The founding father  Nicola Zapata, arrived in Argentina at the end of the XIX century and planted the winery’s first grapes in 1902. Since then, the Zapata family has passed the wine-making tradition through the generations and continues to produce some of the area’s most outstanding wines. They produce excellent wines, and the visit is a must-see for many travellers that arrives from the USA, Canada and Europe.

Norton

In 1895, Edmund James Palmer Norton got to know Mendoza during the construction of a train that united Mendoza with Chile. Amazed by the land, he founded Bodega Norton, south of the Mendoza River, planting vines imported from France. Norton opens its doors to visitors to show them the world of wine culture starting from the vines to the winemaking with a tasting and cheers in the wine shop bar at the end. Visiting Norton, you will have the opportunity to taste wine in each of its stages of production, and at the end, finishing with a blend-your-own-wine activity and at lunch, you can taste everyone’s blends and choose a winner.

Altavista Winery

The founders of Altavista made wine of the most important viticultural regions in the world, from France to Hungary and Argentina, where they created Alta Vista in 1998 in search of excellence for the two emblematic grapes of Argentina: Malbec and Torrontés. The result was the perfect combination of French savior-faire and Argentine passion. The visit here begins with the winemaking process, a walk around the production area and cave, and ending in their tasting room and boutique with a tasting of one white and two reds. Alta Vista offers the unique opportunity to appreciate the French winemaking style in the emblematic varietals typical of the Argentine land.
